Spot Removal Guide

Monday, April 16th, 2012

3B’s always advises that you give prompt attention to Spots and Spills  for  Best Results  on your Carpet, Upholstery and Mattress  cleaning or call us at 951-698-6458 if you are not sure what to use. Use a spoon or knife to remove solid materials and always blot up liquid spills with a white towel. Never rub, scrub or use a stiff brush, this can cause damage to the carpet fibers, but you can use a soft brush, like a toothbrushe’s texture in order to work the solution between the fibers. ALWAYS use a cleaning agent and a procedure that is appropriate for the type of stain to be removed. If you don’t, you could void the Manufacturers Warranty on your carpet. Most spot removers sold at the store are not approved by the Carpet Manufacturers, the only one I am currently aware for approval, is called Folex,  which is citrus based. One of the BEST SPOT REMOVERS that is on the approval list for  COMMON FOOD and BEVERAGE SUBSTANCES is WHITE VINEGAR and WATER mixed equal parts, which you should prepare in a spray bottle and have ready in a CARRYING CADDY with a Soft Bristle Brush and some White Towels. For Urine, Vomit, or Fece’s, please use 100 percent White Vinegar in a spray bottle to clean initially and then re-apply the White Vinegar and set a white or light colored Towel on the spot with a heavy object that has a flat bottom, such as a case of water on top  of it. Do this repeatedly for about a half an hour to an hour depending on the severity of the situation, until there is no appearance of the spot coming onto the towel. This will  help pull up what may have got into the backing of the carpet and the pad. The amount of White Vinegar you spray, is based on the severity of the spot. The worse the spot is, the more Vinegar you apply. White Vinegar is a solution of  5 percent acetic acid and can change the color of some dyes, so it should always be tested first in a hidden area with a White Towel and make sure, there is no carpet color on it or any discoloration in the area you cleaned. White Vinegar can be bought by the gallon at any Grocery Store, Costco or Sam’s Club and can also be used for other cleaning purposes; this will cost you less money then buying Spot Removers.

Also,  be sure to apply all cleaning agents to a cloth, rather then directly to the spotted area, this avoids saturating the carpet when spot cleaning; clean the fibers, not the backing of the carpet.  You can use a soft brush on the stains that are dried on the fibers though.  Do not rush, Deep stains might require repeat cleanings,  because they can “WICK“ back up after an initial cleaning. If this occurs, be sure to clean the area again and set a towel over the area and weigh it down with a heavy, colorfast object such as a plastic waste basket with a weight inside. Continue to change the towel until the towel shows there is no evidence of the stain coming onto the towel. Be sure to always work your stains from the outside to the center, this will help prevent the stained area from spreading.

For OIL BASED STAINS use a product called Krud Kutter which is Biodegradable and follow the same procedures as above. You can purchase this product at any Home Improvement store.

The Best Carpet Cleaning Method

Consumer Report
By: Richard Byrne Source: Nationwide Consumer Testing Institute

Everyone seems to be in the Carpet Cleaning Business, with many different methods. With the help of Nationwide Consumer Testing, I have evaluated the Different Carpet Cleaning Methods so that you, as a consumer, can decide which method is best for your purposes. The results of these comprehensive tests show that Circular Dry-Foam Carpet Cleaning Method did a superior job over all other processes.

Nationwide Consumer Testing found that the Steam methods, which are misnamed because they don’t use Steam, did only a surface cleaning. The hot water detergent solution that was shot into the carpet, forced more dirt deeper into the carpet than it removed. Soil removal was 15.6%. The high amount of detergent residue remaining in the carpet caused it to re-soil in 2 to 3 months. Drying time was from 1 to 5 days with the average being 2 1/2 days.

The Chemical Dry, Rotary Brush, and Shampoo methods removed a higher percentage of soil (21% to 46.5%) but the remaining residue was high and it re-soiled in 3 to 5 months. Drying time was from 1 to 4 days with the average being 2 days.

The combination of Shampoo and Steam had poor soil removal (25.1%) with a high level of detergent residue causing carpets to re-soil rapidly in 1 to 2 months. Drying time was from 2 to 7 days with the average being 3 1/4 days.

The aerosol spray cans and the small Shampoo, Steam and Rinse machines-for-rent did such a poor cleaning job that Nationwide Consumer Testing discontinued testing these methods. They said, “They can advertise all they want, but these methods have very poor soil removal and very high detergent residue.”

The Best Carpet Cleaning Process found by Nationwide Consumer Testing is the Circular Dry-Foam Carpet Cleaning Method They said, “Our research shows that the Circular Dry-Foam Carpet Cleaning Method with separate initial and finish vacuuming, really removes the dirt and keeps the carpet looking better, longer.”The Circular Dry-Foam Carpet Cleaning Method had a very high level of soil removal (92.3%) with little or no soap residue. It doesn’t use harsh detergents which are oily or sticky. Carpets resoiled in 12 to 16 months. Drying time was from 45 minutes to 2 1/2 hours with the average being 1 1/4 hours.

Carpet Cleaning and Traffic Lane Gray

Carpet Cleaning and Traffic Lane Gray

Vacuum your Carpet as often as possible to prevent wear in Traffic Area’s

Carpets over a period of time will eventually show signs of wear. This wear can create an illusion of soiling, which can often cause frustration between the homeowner and carpet care professionals. Even though a carpet has been cleaned, it does not mean the traffic areas will look clean, this is especialluy true with your white or lighter colored carpets. Traffic areas are the places where people constantly walk or has a heavy use. This creates what is known as Traffic Lane Gray. The areas will give off the appearance of looking dark as if the carpet still needs to be cleaned. Usually once it dries, it is much lighter, but it will not look like the rest of the carpet do to the natural wear and tear.

There is not much a carpet cleaning care expert can do with traffic lane gray. A carpet can only clean as well as its age and it may not clean as well as you had hoped it would. The best way to try and remedy this problem per the Carpet Manufactures Warranty Guide  is to vacuum these traffic areas on a daily basis. You can also rearrange your furniture or add area rugs, be sure to add a rug barrier under the rug in order to prevent any discoloration of the carpet that is underneath. How Often Should Carpets and Rugs be Cleaned?

Sunday, November 13th, 2011

3B’s Carpet Cleaning and Floor Care Service has had many customers tell us they have not had their carpets cleaned in 3 years or more because they have relied on myths and misconceptions. The fact is that Deep Carpet Cleaning extends the life of your carpet and saves you a lot of money required to replace prematurely worn carpet.  Carpets cleaned on a regular basis provide a healthy and safe living environment for you and your family, and at the same time adding years of life to one of the biggest investments in your Home or Business. So the question is, how often should they be cleaned?  The answer can depend on several factors.

Even though vacuuming can remove most of the dry soil, it is also necessary to have Deep Carpet Cleaning done on your carpet on a regular basis to remove deep embedded soil, pollutants and other debris that will wear down your carpet’s fibers. When cleaned regularly, it is much easier to remove this material and saves you money on extra strength cleaners when you wait too long to clean. If you are noticing soil and dark areas on your carpet; it is very dirty and you should have it cleaned soon. Your cleaning interval will vary and  how often you clean your carpet will depend on a number of different factors. You must consider how many people are in your Home or Business, if you have kids or pets, whether or not smokers are present, and for Businesses; the volume of Traffic. For example, if you have a house with two adults and kids, you should clean your carpet every 6 months for traffic areas and 12 months for all of the carpet. If there are smokers, you should clean it every 4 to 6 months. If you have pets in your home, you should clean it at least every 3 to 4 months. Businesses should be cleaned a minimum of 6 months in the Traffic areas and 12 months for all of the carpet. The above numbers are just a general guideline. They are based on average environmental and living conditions.

Your cleaning interval will also depend on your Household or Business conditions and the Environment where you are located. Also, if you have new carpet, you may want to follow the Warranty Guidelines for Cleaning, which are every 6 months in the Traffic Areas and every 12 months for the all of the carpet depending on the length of the Warranty which can be 5,10,15, and 20 years and the Grade of Carpet you purchased. This is important,  because this is one of the items to meet in order for the Warranty to be honored by the Carpet Manufacturer. The longer you wait to clean, the more potential damage you do to your carpets and rugs, so make your appointment today by visiting 3bscarpetcare.com
